‘Huge honour’ for head of Heart of England Co-op’s funeral division

A key member of the Heart of England Co-operative Society’s management team has been appointed acting president of the National Association of Funeral Directors.

Darryl Smith says it is a huge honour to be taking on one of the most important roles in the UK funeral industry. The NAFD represents more than 4,000 funeral homes across the nation in addition to having an overseas membership.

Mr Smith, who is the general manager of the Heart of England Co-operative Society’s 16 funeral homes, was previously first vice president of the NAFD. He takes over the helm of the organisation following the resignation of Jenny Gilbert-Trigg until formal elections are held in 2025.

The NAFD is the largest and most inclusive representative body for the UK funeral profession.

“It was founded in 1905 and represents the entire spectrum of funeral directing businesses, including independent and family-owned firms, co-operatives and major funeral groups,” said Mr Smith.

“It also provides vital information to help bereaved people choose a funeral provider that best suits their needs. I feel privileged to be taking on this role.”

An NAFD spokesperson said: “The National Association of Funeral Directors regretfully announces the resignation of its president Jenny Gilbert-Trigg. We thank Jenny for her service and wish her every success in her future endeavours.

“We thank Darryl Smith and his ability to provide strong leadership and maintain seamless continuity during this transitional period.

“We remain fully committed to serving our members and upholding the highest standards of professionalism and care. It is business as usual, and we will continue to advocate for the needs of our profession and the families we serve.”

Mr Smith has worked in the funeral industry since 1984 and joined the Heart of England Co-operative Society nearly 18 years ago.
