The Heart of England Co-operative Society has withdrawn the sale of barbecues from its stores as the heatwave continues and a growing number of wildfires continue to devastate homes and swathes of land across the UK.
The decision comes amid growing concerns about the continued threat of destructive wildfires fuelled by the prolonged dry spell. Fire chiefs are also warning of the potential for wildfires to spread into residential areas this weekend and there is a national warning against lighting barbecues or fires.
In Coventry, Warwickshire and the Midlands the risk of blazes spreading is deemed ‘very high’, according to the Met Office’s Fire Severity Index.
A spokesman for the Heart of England Co-operative Society said the barbecues will be removed from the shelves until further notice.
