The Heart of England Co-operative Society has agreed to support the citizens of Ukraine.

The Society is giving members and customers the opportunity to support the Ukraine international emergency appeal by placing collection tins in each of its 36 Food stores and 16 Funeral homes.

Every penny from the tins will go direct to a coalition of charities providing on-the-ground support for refugees in Poland and citizens remaining in Ukraine. Specifically, it will be used to help provide food, water, shelter and healthcare to the 4 million to 8 million refugees and displaced families.

The Heart of England is working in partnership with other societies nationally, and with Co-operatives UK, whose International Working Group held an emergency meeting this week.

Following the meeting it was agreed to provide immediate relief through the Disasters Emergency Committee’s (DEC) Ukraine Appeal and to work with other Co-op credit unions in Ukraine and Poland to provide medium and long-term support for refugees.

The Society has also removed all Russian Standard Vodka from its shelves.

Ali Kurji, Chief Executive of the Heart of England Co-operative Society, said: “As a Society we have been touched by the tragedy in the Ukraine and have decided to support wherever we can, through collections in every one of our stores and funeral homes.

“We invite our members and customers to donate anything they can to help support the refuges and citizens of Ukraine.”

He added: “We will be joining with Co-ops UK in this heartfelt appeal for the citizens of Ukraine which we hope in some way will help their plight in these tragic circumstances.”

Collections tins will be available in all Heart of England Co-operative Society Food stores and Funeral homes.

Members and customers can also donate online throughhttps://www.dec.org.uk/
